Munchkin's Pink Ducks and a Lucky Texas Mom Strut a Proud Tail Feather at Starting Line
NORTH HILLS, Calif., (February 23, 2007) - Chiming in with the thousands of hoorays at this weekend's 11th annual Komen Los Angeles County Race for the Cure® in Pasadena will be the quack-quack from a flock of Munchkin® pink ducks and a yee-haw from one lucky Texas mom. The festivities celebrate the culmination of Project Pink, a successful national breast cancer awareness campaign by Munchkin - maker of clever infant and toddler products - that raised over $30,000 to help fight breast cancer.
Project Pink launched in 2006 during Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October). At the heart of the campaign were special-edition pink bath ducks spreading the word "Don't Duck a Breast Exam." The clever critters were sold at retail and online with all net proceeds benefiting Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Adding to the excitement, celebrities ranging from Reese Witherspoon to Janet Jackson to Former First Lady Barbara Bush supported Project Pink by decorating pink ducks for an eBay auction, further raising dollars and awareness for this important cause. To commemorate the success of the pink ducks, Munchkin will be on site at the Race for the Cure with its final supply, selling each duck for $1 ("a buck a duck") with half the purchase price going back to the LA chapter of the Komen Foundation.
"Project Pink reflects our company mantra that ‘it's the little things' that often make the biggest difference," said Doug Gillespie, Vice President, Marketing at Munchkin, Inc. "A simple reminder like ‘don't duck a breast exam' is a unique way to spread an important message. Lives can be saved through early detection, and Munchkin is proud to use its creativity to help fight this terrible disease."
There will be thousands of breast cancer survivors walking on Sunday. Joining the crowd will be Caren Placke of Highland Village, Texas, winner of the Project Pink sweepstakes which includes a trip for her and her family to the event as Munchkin's guests. A special education teacher, Placke was recently diagnosed and currently on the fourth of six chemotherapy treatments. She is thrilled to have the energy to take on the one mile Fun Race with her husband Fred and looks forward to watching her teenage son and daughter cross the finish line of the 5K.
"I had planned to walk in the Dallas chapter event but had to drop out because of the mastectomy," commented Placke. "Thanks to Munchkin this win gives me a second chance to participate and fuels my confidence that I will beat this cancer."
On top of monies raised through Project Pink, Munchkin supports the fight against breast cancer through employee participation at local events like the Los Angeles County Race for the Cure. In addition, Munchkin created a Project Pink micro site www.munchkin.com/projectpink that provides consumers online support and a forum for sharing tips, stories and memories. The site also includes a special "Don't Duck a Breast Exam" e-card feature to send check-up reminders to friends and family.
About Susan G. Komen for the Cure Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G.
